Werner, one of the world’s largest ladder companies, has issued an urgent recall for 78,000 aluminum ladders sold exclusively at Home Depot and Lowe’s. According to the US Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), the five recalled models of Werner ladder can break during use, creating a significant and serious fall hazard for consumers. Werner has recalled five ladder models, all of which are described as multipurpose telescoping aluminum ladders.
Werner Recalls 78,000 Ladders That Can Break, Cause Falls
The following ladder model numbers have been recalled:
- MT-IAA-13A (13 feet)
- MT-IAA-17A (17 feet)
- MT-IAA-22A (22 feet)
- MT-IAA-26 (26 feet)
- MT-IAA-26A (26 feet)
The model number can be located on a label on the ladder’s rail. Recalled ladders will have either one of two date codes, which is stamped on the inner surface of the ladder’s leg: 121744XX or 011844XX. The ladders were released to the market in April 2018 and sold until May 2018.
At Least 1 Reported Injury
Werner has received at least 1 report of a consumer injury, the CPSC reports. A ladder broke underneath a customer, the report says, causing injuries to the user’s left side and below. Given that at least 78,000 of the recalled ladders are in circulation, the true rate of ladder failure and injury could be much higher.
The ladders in question, all of which have a load capacity of 375 pounds, can be modified to assume one of five different configurations:
- twin step ladder
- extension ladder
- wall ladder
- stairway step ladder
- scaffold base
The ladders have been recalled over a serious risk of injury, though Werner has not yet released details on the nature of the problem.
